Pilates Definition
Let's talk about Pilates? What is definition of pilates? Where has pilates started from?

Pilates is an innovative and safe system of mind-body exercise using a floor mat or a variety of equipment. It evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates and can dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. Pilates builds strength without excess bulk, capable of creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen.

Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise system that will help you look and feel your very best. It teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. PILATES  also improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can even help alleviate back pain.

Pilates is a MIND-BODY exercise program, what does it mean?

Mind-body exercise like Pilates is activity that keys on the mental focus of the physical movements being performed. With this type of exercise quality of movement is stressed over quantity of movement. You'll often see instructors using a lot of verbal "cues" and coaching on things like the quality of breathing, rhythmic inhalation and exhalation during the exercise, and proper body alignment. Simply put mind-body exercise contributes to overall fitness and assists with engagement of the mind.

History of Pilates

Pilates is a physical system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. Pilates called his method "Contrology" It is practiced worldwide, especially in Western countries such as Australia, Canada, the United state and the United Kingdom. As of 2005, there were 11 million people practicing the discipline regularly and 14,000 instructors in the United States.

Pilates developed in the aftermath of the late 19th century physical culture of exercising in order to alleviate ill health.

A study undertaken by the Australian Federal Government was published in 2015  based on research up to 2013. The conclusion of this review was that there was only limited evidence to support the effectiveness of Pilates to alleviate problems such as lower back pain. A new review, the Natural Therapies Review 2019-20, has been commissioned to determine if Pilates (and other natural therapies) are effective, using up to date research. Whilst the 2015 Review looked at 13 studies, the Pilates Alliance of Australasia has submitted over 400 studies related to the effectiveness of Pilates

In the 1970s, Hollywood celebrities discovered Pilates via Ron Fletcher's studio in Beverly Hills.

Where the stars go, the media follows. In the late 1980s, the media began to cover Pilates extensively. The public took note, and the Pilates business boomed. No longer the workout of the elite, Pilates has entered the fitness mainstream. It is not only featured in fitness facilities all over the world, but has become a crucial training adjunct to elite athletes all over the world including the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, NHL and many Olympic athletes.

Pilates Lifestyle

DON'T FORGET EMOTIONS COME FROM MOTIONS

For so many of us, Pilates is much more than an exercise method – it is a way of life.

No matter who we are or what shape we are in, we feel how Pilates enhances the everyday activities of our lives – whether it's just bending over to take  the shoes off  or running a 26-mile marathon. And by becoming ingrained in our thought process it can move beyond the physical realm – essentially teaching us to effectively manage our entire being while providing a positive connection to our sense of self.

Pilates is a Mindful Movement, what does it mean?

Here at Endless Lifestyle Studio we believe that movement — particularly mindful movement — can change the way we live. But what exactly is mindful movement? Well, the concept starts with the notion that the body and mind are interconnected. Mindful movement is exercise performed with awareness. It involves mental focus, to train your body to move optimally through both athletic activities and everyday life. It's exercise that makes you move smarter.

Types of Pilates

  • Mat Pilates

  • Reformer Pilates

  • Clinical pilates

  • Contemporary pilates

  • Classical pilates

Mat Pilates

Performed on the floor, Mat Pilates was the way Joseph Pilates originally began teaching his specific routine of movements, and involves little to no equipment. Today, Mat classes continue to be challenging and heavily focused on strengthening the core. Mat Pilates is often taught in large groups and will therefore give limited individual attention to participants. (at Endless Studio we offer a small group of about 10 people, as the right body movement and posture are our goal).

Reformer Pilates

As the name suggests, Group Reformer Pilates offers a dynamic, full body workout all on one piece of equipment: the Reformer.Reformer Pilates is all about flow, and classes will see you being guided through a series of exercises on the machine, using resistance springs to increase or decrease difficulty. The large classes, between 8 to 30 people, are fun, energetic, will have you working up a sweat, and are great for improving general fitness.

However, as popularity rises, and more and more Reformer franchises open, the quality of Pilates instructors is not always guaranteed. And while classes are more affordable than studios, their large size often means less opportunity for teachers to give individual attention to people's goals and concerns. We highly recommend choosing the studio that has small group reformer classes.

Clinical pilates

Clinical Pilates has recently become popular for its presumed link to the medical profession. However, the name can be misleading, as Clinical Pilates often disregards the traditional Pilates method and understanding of the entire body, and instead simply uses Pilates equipment as a tool to treat a specific injury.

(the style of class we run at Endless Lifestyle Studio) is taught in fully equipped studios under expert instruction, and is seen by many as the most comprehensive style, catering to everything from rehab and sports training to general fitness and pregnancy.

Classes often combine classical exercises as created by Joseph Pilates, with more contemporary variations, equipment and modern learnings of biomechanics, sports science and physiotherapy. This fusion, along with the fact that classes are run as private or intimate size with maximum 8 people, make Studio Pilates an extremely individually focused and powerful form of exercise.

Classical Pilates

Similar to Studio Pilates, Classical Pilates typically takes place in a fully equipped studio environment. The classes pay homage to the work of Joseph Pilates, and stick as closely as possible to his original series of movements; each one performed in a specific order, and designed to build on the one before it. In order for this form of Pilates to be effective, it needs to be taught by highly trained instructors of Joseph's method.
